Have you ever rationalized to yourself the reasons you’re not an alcoholic? Come up with justifications for why you drink when others question you or you start to question yourself? It’s always interesting to look at those justifications and the truth behind them.
I don’t go to meetings.
(Because there obviously aren’t millions of alcoholics out there that have never set foot in a meeting.)
I’m successful at work.
(Because functional alcoholics don’t exist. There aren’t any alcoholics who simply drink after work.)
I never drink alone.
(I’m not alone of I’m at a bar, or if the kids are home. There’s other people physically present right?)
I don’t drink every day.
(Binge drinking can still be a form of alcoholism.)
I don’t have an addictive personality.
(Actually there’s no such thing as an addictive personality.)
I’m healthy. I eat well and I exercise.
(Alcohol causes cancer. Even in small amounts.)
I’m not drinking any more than I use to.
(You’re also not drinking any less and there was a point in time where you weren’t drinking at all.)
I don’t drink hard liquor.
(It doesn’t matter what gets you drunk. Alcohol is alcohol.)
I can take care of myself and my family. We’re financially stable.
(But could you be doing a better job at it? Enjoying it more?)
I don’t pass out drunk.
(Can you fall asleep without drinking though?)
I don’t drink and drive.
(Yet. Alcohol causes us to take risks we shouldn’t.)
I don’t drink in the mornings.
(When you sleep until noon after drinking all night, its easy to say that!)
What excuses have you told yourself before? How many reasons did you have to show you’re not an alcoholic? And what reason made you realize that you in fact, it just might be time to get back in control of your relationship with alcohol?
